Day 13: Sight Seeing
The Wachau is a beautiful region with such a rich history! Marina's parents grew up in neighboring villages and got married in a cute, little church. It has the oldest continuously operating school, dating all the way back to 1385! It was neat to see the remnants of the wall that was built around the church as a safe place for the people to go if they were under attack. What was also amazing was the terraced vineyards that covered much of the mountain side. Each terrace was bout 7 feet tall. Could you imagine harvesting those grapes?! Marina's dad was a great tour guide, showing us around his village.

Our next adventure was to take a 10 mile bike ride up the Danube river and then catch a ferry back. We we're running a little late so it ended up being quite a strenuous ride, at least for the out-of-shape (ie me!). To make it even more interesting it started pouring about half way there. But we powered on and made it on the boat just before they pulled in the ramp! At least the sun came out so we were able to dry off a bit on the upper deck. This was James's first ever bike ride. He loved it once we got started and I'm sure he'll enjoy many more rides with daddy before he can ride a bike on his own!
